Smeaton's Tower in Plymouth, West England's cultural capital and Devon's most important city. It was from Plymouth, that adventurers such as Drake, Cook and the Pilgrim Fathers, set out on their momentous voyages to find new worlds.
The imposing Royal Citadel, overlooks one of the world's largest and most amazing natural harbors: Plymouth Sound. Built in the 1660s after the Dutch Wars, it was the most important English defence for over 100 years, with 70ft walls.
The Barbican is the city's medieval heart. Amble thru its narrow cobbled streets, shop for antiques, visit New Street's Elizabethan House and passby the Mayflower Steps from where the famous Pilgrim Fathers set sail for America in 1620.
Black Friars Distillery, home of Plymouth Gin, formerly a Dominican Monastery dating back to 1425 and reputed to have been where the Pilgrim fathers spent their last night before sailing on the Mayflower. Now they just serve great cocktails!
National Marine Aquarium is the UK's foremost and Europe's deepest aquarium. It is located in Coxside, next to the Barbican harbor and fishmarket in a modern building housing gigantic aquariums, a lecture hall, café and a shop.
