The Seattle Community Shield is a pre-season Major League Soccer game between host Seattle Sounders and an invited club. The model for the event is based upon the “Charity or Community Shield” matches in England, where they are a long-standing tradition. Proceeds from the event benefit Northwest community organizations. Following the match, the teams will sign autographs from the field.
The inaugural edition of the Seattle Sounders Community Shield was played on March 11, 2010 at Qwest Field by Seattle Sounders and their Pacific Northwest arch rivals - the Portland Timbers.
