The CONCACAF Gold Cup (aka Copa Oro in Spanish) is the top men's national football competition in the region of North America, Central America and the Caribbean. The tournament is usually held in the USA due to the many excellent stadiums and the large populace of immigrant fans in many big cities.
Before 1963, there were 2 separate competitions, the CCCF Championship and the NAFC Championship, due to North America having 2 separate confederations. Beginning in 1963, it was originally called the CONCACAF Championship, changing to CONCACAF Gold Cup in 1990. In 2007 CONCACAF decided that they would eliminate inviting guest national teams to the tournament, thus creating a CONCACAF-only tournament and the addition more smaller nations getting spots.
