The OFC Nations Cup (aka Oceania Nations Cup) is a continental football competition held every 4 years for Oceanian nations, organized by the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC). It began in 1973 as the Oceania Cup. A 2nd edition took place in 1980, then was discontinued. In 1996 it reappeared as the Oceania Nations Cup and has been held every since 1996 by the OFC. Historically, a very large gulf separated Australia (now AFC) and New Zealand from the smaller island nations. Little attention was paid to the tournament by the rest of the football world, but the competition has increased in importance as it now qualifies the winner for the Confederations Cup and for a play-off for the FIFA World Cup.
