The South Asian Games (aka SAF Games, SAG or South Asian Federation Games) are a regional multi-sport event (including football) held every 2 years for South Asian nations, organized by the South Asian Sports Council (SASC). The 1st South Asian Games were hosted by Kathmandu, Nepal in 1983. In 2004, the South Asian Sports Council decided to rename the games from South Asian Federation Games to South Asian Games as the officials believed the word ‘Federation’ was hampering spectator appeal. The games help in promoting cultural exchanges between the member countries. Devoid of any cultural, religious, racial or political barriers, the nations gather together under one banner to create a show of sportsmanship.
