The 'Venice of the North' has 165 canals, the most beautiful being Keizersgracht, Prinsengracht and Herengracht. These pedestrianized arched canals are lined with trees, bikes, house-boats, slim buildings and are fancifully lit-up at night.

Dutch coffee shops are licensed to legally sell small quantities of hashish and cannabis (marijuana) to adults over 18. They sell coffee and have tables to drink it, but their primary item is marijuana, for sale on a menu with hundreds of varieties.

The infamous ruby glowing district covers a large area of the oldest part of the city, dating back to the 14th Century when sailors arrived in need of female company. It is full of sex shops, brothels, gay bars, cinemas, hotels and various museums.

The largest and most prestigious museum for arts, crafts and history in Holland. A large collection of paintings from Vermeer, Rembrandt, Hals, Ruysdael, Steen and other Dutch Masters are on view, including delftware, ships and many dollhouses.

The house is a museum dedicated to Jewish wartime diarist Anne Frank, who hid from Nazi persecution during WWII with her family and four other people in hidden rooms at the rear of the building. The hiding places on the top floors are unforgettable.
