Typical canal, bridge, boats & bikes
The 'Venice of the North' has 165 canals, the most beautiful being Keizersgracht, Prinsengracht and Herengracht. These pedestrianized arched canals are lined with trees, bikes, house-boats, slim buildings and are fancifully lit-up at night.
Coffeeshops
Coffeeshops
Dutch coffee shops are licensed to legally sell small quantities of hashish and cannabis (marijuana) to adults over 18. They sell coffee and have tables to drink it, but their primary item is marijuana, for sale on a menu with hundreds of varieties.
Red Light District
Red Light District
The infamous ruby glowing district covers a large area of the oldest part of the city, dating back to the 14th Century when sailors arrived in need of female company. It is full of sex shops, brothels, gay bars, cinemas, hotels and various museums.
Rijksmuseum Amsterdam
Rijksmuseum Amsterdam
The largest and most prestigious museum for arts, crafts and history in Holland. A large collection of paintings from Vermeer, Rembrandt, Hals, Ruysdael, Steen and other Dutch Masters are on view, including delftware, ships and many dollhouses.
Anne Frank House
Anne Frank House
The house is a museum dedicated to Jewish wartime diarist Anne Frank, who hid from Nazi persecution during WWII with her family and four other people in hidden rooms at the rear of the building. The hiding places on the top floors are unforgettable.
Amsterdam is one of Europe's coolest cities, with impressive architecture, lovely crisscrossing canals and great shopping. Beautiful, hip, and laid back, with lots to do, lots to see, many pubs, global cuisine and friendly people who nearly all speak English. This is an excellent city to tour on foot or bicycle. A visit to this beautiful city is sometimes like taking a walk back in the 17th century, as the center of Amsterdam has a lot of charming buildings dating from this period. However, while Amsterdam may boast a lot of history, that's about all that's old fashioned about the place. There is something for every traveler here, whether you prefer culture and history, serious partying, or just the relaxing charm of an old European city.
  1. In summer go for a relaxing afternoon in Vondelpark. It is a lively park, right in the center of things with outdoor concerts.
