Porto
Porto
"The City of Bridges" ![]() Dom Luís I Bridge & Porto skyline
Porto is Portugal's 2nd largest city and rival to bigger Lisbon. Though thriving commerce makes it wealthy, its traditional roots, medieval treasures, faded grandeur charm and local pride still reign supreme in the mighty city on the Douro.
![]() Barco Rabelo boats on the Douro
A typical Porto scene: Barco Rabelo boats loaded with Port wine docked on the Douro with the Dom Luís I Bridge in the background. The bridge connects Vila Nova de Gaia with Porto and creates a romantic and serene riverside scene.
![]() Port wine cellars
Port wine is Porto's most famous export and one of the world's best. Its been made the same way from Douro riverbank grapes, shipped down river on Barcos Rabelos and aged in cellars under nearby Vila Nova de Gaia for 100s of years.
![]() Ribeira (Riverside)
The Ribeira (Riverside) is Porto's historic center with so much mystical ambiance and cultural eye candy it's a World Heritage Site. The old buildings are vividly painted and contain windows with peering old ladies, clothes and FC Porto signs.
![]() Passieo in Foz do Douro
A commanding view of the coast and the river from the Passieo walkway on the seafront in Foz do Douro, a Porto suburb and very popular bathing resort, beautifully situated at the mouth of the Douro river.
Overlooking the Douro River, Porto is Portugal's 2nd largest city and the gracious capital of the north. This thriving industrial hub successfully blends commerce with unpretentious charm. Porto is proud to be known as the city of work. Indeed there is a saying: 'Coimbra studies, Braga prays, Lisbon shows off and Porto works.' The hard work, however, is counter-balanced by the honest and hospitable spirit of its people. For the visitor, most points of interest are shoe-horned into a fairly small area between the beautiful Ribeira (Riverside) district and the central Avenida dos Aliados. Within this area is the maze of medieval alleys, old world shops, azuelo-tiled buildings, cobbled streets and baroque monuments that define Porto.
