Port Said
Lying at the junction of Africa & Asia, Port Said was originally built in 1859 to be the northern entrance of the Suez Canal that links the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. The Egyptian city's port grew to be the biggest transit port in the world. The city also enjoys a wonderful weather all year round. The city is quiet and small, the best place for relaxation and shopping. It might be surprising that New York's Statue of Liberty was originally built to be placed in Port Said. Auguste Bartholdi, the sculptor of the statue, designed the lady as Egypt carrying the light of Asia. The Khedive Ismail decided that the project was too expensive, so the statue was sent to the United States and became the famous Statue of Liberty.
