Holy Savior Church
Holy Savior Church
Ths Holy Savior Church from 1824 is tiny but special as its courtyard is the grave of Macedonia's greatest national hero Goce Delchev, who led the liberation from the Turks. The icons located here are some of the best of the Byzantine Revival era.
Skopje, Macedonia’s capital, has had many different incarnations which have left indelible marks on the city, as evidenced by Skopje’s varied architecture and its mix of different cultures. Skopje has always been a center of power long coveted by various empires, prized for its strategic location. It was celebrated for its urban life and fortress, and renowned for having the most beautiful church in the region. Under the Ottoman Turks the look of the city changed with the construction of many mosques, Turkish baths and bridges. In July 1963 an earthquake struck and 75% of the buildings in the city disappeared in just seconds. After that, a big rebuilding project began, trying to make Skopje the model city of the socialist world.
