The SuperLiga (aka North American SuperLiga) is a friendly club football competition between 8 clubs from the FMF (Mexico) and the MLS (USA/Canada). 2007's inaugural edition has 8 invited clubs, whereas future competitions will use a qualification process. This will create a more competitive format as the previous season’s top 8 clubs from Mexico and the US play in a “Champions League-style” tournament for $1 million in prize money and additional lucrative home fixtures.
The SuperLiga also gives US and Mexican clubs a guaranteed chance to square off for regional supremacy and bragging rights as encounters in the annual CONCACAF Champions’ Cup are not always assured.
